    Nusantara Natural Whetstones

Here’s a very unique new natural whetstone that I have a feeling is going to take the sharpening world by storm.

    8x3x1 approximate dimensions.

Medium high hardness, high polishing grit and very fast cutting speed due to rich abrasive content. These stones will get muddy with firm pressure, but will only very faintly auto slurry when honing with water to finish. Suitable for a range of tasks.

These stones provide a very sharp yet skin friendly and mellow edge for straight razor, shavers. They also provide an exceptionally great finish for knives whether you are tasking out your chef knife, or looking for something to hone your fieldcraft blades and axes. While these stones do cut very quick, I wouldn’t recommend it as your initial coarse stone for

re-profiling edges that need more serious work. These stones will shine at mid range to finishing level sharpening and polishing.

Nusantara is the ancient Javanese name for Indonesia, and I went with this name to describe their heritage and origin.

These natural whetstones are mind by hand out of an ancient mountain range in Indonesia, we work closely with the local mining community and have carefully graded this batch by hand to assure they are of the highest quality.

These Indo stones caught my attention because the geology and petrology of these islands is very similar to that of Japan. As we all know, Japanese Whetstones are world famous for their sharpening properties and qualities. Fortune has it that Indonesia also has high potential for the sharpening world, geology does not conform to modern man’s geographical claiming and naming of islands.

This is controversial to say but I’m going to say it anyway… As soon as I tried these stones, the Japanese naturals in my collection were the closest thing I could compare them to on hand. To beginner this might seem like a broad leap, but to a more well-versed connoisseur of sharpening stones, this makes perfect sense. The islands were both formed in a similar manner, and the sedimentary stones come many layers, some of which have much more desirable qualities than others.

With full confidence I can say that this incredible new type of stone I’m experimenting with will give its local relatives a serious run for their money.

Here’s a brief summary of what REALLY stands out to me.

These are Semi hard to quite hard, super fine grit and best of all very fast cutting. When slurried with a diamond plate it yields rich yellow and creamy slurry that darkens instantly when you sharpen- quickly wiping out lower range scratch patterns and letting you transition to a super sharp and refined edge.

These stones are a sedimentary rock that’s undergone compaction and has rich cutting abrasive content in it. The makeup of these stones is volcanic ash and oceanic sediment, rich in silicates and polish abrasives that seem to break down in slurry and get finer and finer with each sharpening strokes

These stones aren’t super easy to gouge into, yet will also instantly draw metal swarf from high quality steel. You’ll want to take care with your sharpening strokes because these stones can be gouged however, this is advantageous because this means the cutting grit is also rapidly released and with firm pressure they will generate mud… if you’re doing more refined honing and polishing use a lighter touch. Slurry the stone with the matching stone that comes with it, or with a diamond plate for excellent speed and polishing results.

Honestly these are a dream come true for those in pursuit of the best natural whetstones in the world, I’ve been searching for something like these stones for over a decade.

The performance leaves nothing to be desired and the natural beauty is spectacular. These stones vary wildly in patterning with streaks of faint blue and burnt umber to an orangish red that is visually mesmerizing to behold. Many often contain a swirling or woodgrain pattern or streaks that almost are reminiscent of birds in flight. These are difficult to photograph, the color ranges from cream to ivory with a hint of yellow, almost like crème brûlée.

Finding a stone like this free of major impurities or inclusions is an anomaly. Historically in Asia

Mountains that produced stones of this quality were considered a military asset as well as a prized locality for stones that could sharpen carpentry tools to an unbelievable level of refinement. As a connoisseur of high grade stones I was shocked when I first tested these stones and found the appearance and performance to be incredibly similar to other Asian whetstones that are highly sought after and the mountains of origin completely depleted.

It’s my pleasure to make these available to the public at a competitive cost vs professional grade Japanese stones… And provide them to professional and hobby level sharpeners at an extremely affordable price while I can still get my hands on these.
